Transportation Coordination
To create a transportation information service that would be reguarly updated to give customers the best possible service in Missouri and to allow transportationproviders to share resources and information
These questions are offered as a discussion guide: • How should we share information on transportation and related resources in our communities? • What are the most useful ways and best practices that reach Veterans, Service Members and their families? • How could communications among stakeholders and state, local, and Federal partners be improved?

One of the challenges to coordinating operations between human service transportation providers and MSO/VSO transportation providers is the lack of easy mechanisms for being able to send trip request or vehicle availability information between providers. Aside from phone calls and faxes, there is no straightforward and secure means to communicate between systems unless perhaps the providers are using the same scheduling & dispatch software.
Building a lingua franca for exchanging data veterans’ transportation needs would go a long way towards lowering the barrier to coordination. Aside from the technical details of file formats and specifying how the machine-to-machine communication would work, I think on the human side the nitty-gritty of this would involve attending to the details finding common terminology for what we do and achieving a deep understanding of one another’s operations.
This has largely been accomplished in the fixed-route world with such services as Google Transit and Bing Transit, which both use the General Transit Feed Specification to describe bus routes. I would love to see an equivalent set of tools developed in the demand-response transportation world, something that providers and software vendors can coalesce around.
Coordinating operations can be challenging in general because it involves so many moving parts. Getting this basic communication piece in place would better position us to tackle those other barriers.

It's good to know there is a wealth of information on the internet about services provided to Veterans. But I have found the challenge in knowing where to look and how to search without being overwhelmed in accessing the information. As a transportation provider, it would be extremely beneficial for there to be a One-source information center for transportation providers to locate transportation services, benefits, programs, training, etc. This information should be uniformed and required for all Transportation providers to keep on hand in their vehicles for either passing out or informational purposes. This will definitely aid in increased quality service in having knowledgeable providers educating their customers/passengers on available services. There should also be more community outreach to assist in getting the word out about these services so people can be better informed and equipped in leveraging these services. When you know better, you do better.

Our transit system would love to work directly with the closest VA Hospital so that we can get vets there, but they have so many restrictions that it seems they can't even talk to us. We can't even call them unless we go through a board member who has a military ID. One local group has a van making trips to the hospital, but it's not accessible. We'd like to help with that, but we can't seem to get the communication ...more »

The MV-1 http://www.vpgautos.com/experience-MV-1/mobility-vehicle-features is a wheel chair accessible van, and in my state would only require a chauffeur’s license to operate (not CDL). I would like to know if the DAV or other volunteer transportation provider has added this vehicle to their fleet and the overall thoughts of choosing this option versus a passenger van or paratransit bus?

Returning veterans from war need best counsel from community colleges located in their county or nearer community colleges near their county.
Government should appoint one supervisor counsel person for “Veterans Help desk” & that person make small student’s voluntary group in college to receiving helps in routine work.
Combine all supervisors from all community college via e-mails & with unique website where they are members of it.
These group of people need to update themselves(gather information) from all types of government’s, federal’s, non-government’s, privet ngo’s, public ngo’s and other origination’s who offers or announce or benefits/offers for veterans & their family. In other hand all these helpful originations has to correspond with single person per community college & that person help those who live near by to that county community college or near by.
Besides this these group of supervisors aware with their college’s educational systems to help veterans & their family for choosing right career classes which benefits them in earning, too.
Veterans & their family at lest visit community college to get this help, once they reach there they will be meeting with full of informed person who will lay more then one opportunities to them to give them right to select which one is best for them.
Reason putting supervisor is, there are more then five organizations announce help or benefits or opportunities for veterans and their family. They put information on websites or some time they advertise in news paper but there are chances that veterans and their family skip those information due to un-attendance so these recruited people in colleges has only work to do is gather all these information behalf of them & when veterans and their family arrived to get advice they can received right & useful information.
Voluntary group of students can help those supervisors in routine work, too & some time help veterans and their family in needful situations.
This system will create one practical social network, which will help all the veterans once they find themselves in community college premises.
Furthermore, if any community person wants announce party for veterans and their family they can get all data that how many veterans living around them & they can get in touch by that why, also.
If, government likes this suggestion then, I have one more tip that they can appoint or select supervisors who is veterans itself returning or returned form war. That way he can help/treat him/her colleagues with equal level of feelings.

Associations like NDTA would be glad to help in this dialogue. Our local chapters’ NTW commemorations include a 5K supporting Operation Homefront, golf tournaments supporting chapter scholarships, and banquets honoring current and future transportation leaders. At all of these events, logistics and transportation professionals come together to network and share knowledge on issues like meeting Vets’ transportation needs http://www.ndtahq.com/events_national_trans_week.htm

These kinds of vet networks can be powerful tools for connecting those in need with those who wish to serve.

The Veteran populations of America, young and old, are continuing to access resources and services via their mobile and tablet devices. Yet, many government services and even local community transportation services go unknown to Veterans and their Families as they move to new neighborhoods or attend Military training (if in the National Guard) in distant, unfamiliar geographic areas. Our idea, selfish as it is, is to develop a central database for transportation options (free and those that cost) for Veterans and their Families and then to serve this information easily and simply to smartphones, which can automatically geolocate a user and show them transportation options "around me." Many Veterans who cannot afford a personal computer and may need transportation the most are instead opting to purchase a smartphone as their means to connect to the Internet, text messaging, phone lines, and as a status symbol - YET - there are almost zero choices for Veterans in the iPhone and Droid marketplaces, especially transportation related Veteran apps. We would love to discuss this idea in this open forum and determine the ideal mobile phone needs of Veteran transportation services. Many times Veterans cannot get to a job interview or get to their 2nd or 3rd job because of the lack of transportation. The more we can do to empower Vets to know what transportation options are available to them, anywhere, anytime, the more job opportunities will then be open to our country's civilian soldiers and the tragic unemployment statistics can begin to decrease.

We should look into educating those on Military bases through participation in the Yellow Ribbon Program events. These events help members prior to and after deployments. They serve as a one stop information session for these persons and the family members as well. Including parents, friends, partners, etc.

What can transportation providers and transit agencies do to ensure that they are meeting the needs of all veterans, service members and their families? Are there generational differences that must be considered in reaching out and engaging with these communities? Are there some priorities that are consistent across the entire veteran and military community (i.e. access to jobs, accessto education, access to medical appointments) in regard to their transportation needs?
