Wheelchair standards WC 19 - safe securement

The Veterans Administration should pay for and encourage “transit” wheelchairs that comply with ANSI/RESNA standard WC19. This is a voluntary standard that specifies design and performance requirements for wheelchairs that are suitable for use as a seat in motor vehicles. These mobility devices can be more easily secured on public transit vehicles and are safer in the (unlikely) event of a crash.

New ADA regulations require transit agencies to accommodate all mobility devices that can be boarded. However, some mobility devices won’t fit onto a bus. It is important for Veterans to have all of the information that they need to make good choices about the mobility device that works best for them in all situations, including while using public transit.
